Steps for changing your baby's diaper

1. Wash and dry your hands properly

2. Make sure you have everything you need to change your newborn's diaper

  • Clean disposable diapers. It's always good to have a couple of spares just in case.

  • A pack of baby wipes, damp cloth or warm water.

  • A diaper sack for the dirty diaper and used baby wipes.

  • A lidded bin for dirty diapers.

  • A set of newborn clothes. Leaked diapers? No worries, just prepare for a change of clothes!

  • A distraction. It's good to keep a favourite toy visible to distract your child!

By ensuring that you have all the diapering essentials on hand, you won't need to leave your newborn on his/her own in order to get the things you need. Plus, make sure that room is not too cold as your newborn be naked bottom half for a while.

3. Remove your newborn's dirty diaper

  • Next, lay your newborn on his back on a changing mat on the floor or a clean and tidy changing table.

  • Roll your newborn hands in his shirt to keep his hands clean and from moving.

  • Undress your newborn’s bottom half.

  • Leave your newborn’s top half covered to keep him warm.

  • Unfasten the sticky tabs and fold them over so they don’t stick to your newborn’s skin.

  • If you have a male newborn, you may want to point his penis down towards the diaper to avoid him peeing on you.

  • Your newborn may pee or poo soon after you open up his nether regions, hence you need to put a new diaper on the newborn fast.

4. Clean your baby up

  • Raise your newborn's bottom gently off the table by grasping both ankles so you can remove the diaper and clean them.

  • If your newborn has a poo, use the front of the diaper to clean as much off his skin as possible.

  • Throw the dirty diaper into your diaper bin or roll it up, sticking down the tapes to seal it, and put to one side for a minute.

  • Use the baby wipes to clean the rest of your newborn’s bottom regardless of whether he did a poo or wee.

  • If you have a female newborn, clean her from front to back so she doesn’t get any germs in her vagina.

  • If you have a male newborn, clean around his testicles and penis.

5. Dry your baby

  • Make sure your newborn’s bottom is dry before putting on the clean diaper as the sticky tabs won’t work if they are wet.

  • Dry your newborn’s bottom with a towel.

6. Put a clean diaper on

  • Place a clean diaper under your newborn by gently grasping both his ankles and lifting his bottom in the air.

  • If you have a male newborn, make sure his penis is pointing down.

  • Fold the top part of the diaper down so that his cord stump is not in the diaper.

  • Make sure the diaper between your newborn’s legs is spread open to avoid chafing.

  • Fasten the diaper on each side using the sticky tabs.

7. Clean up

  • Put your newborn in a safe place like on the floor or in a cot, then put the diaper sack in a lidded bin.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly or use a hand sanitiser if a sink isn't available.

Well, I hope all these steps will help you to change your newborn’s diaper.
