In this article, I will be sharing when your baby rolls over and how you can encourage your baby to roll over.
The first rollover is the first significant developmental milestone where you will witness your baby taking control of his body.
1. Look for your newborn’s physical ability to hold his head up against gravity.
You might be surprised at how well your newborn can hold his head up for short periods.
Your newborn is born with enough strength in his neck muscles to lift his head and look around for a few seconds.
Your newborn can turn his head to one side or the other when you placed him on his tummy.
2. Do mini push-ups.
Your newborn will begin to push his upper body up and lift his head to a 45 or 90-degree angle when lying in tummy time.
This strengthens your newborn’s shoulder and upper body muscles.
3. Start to develop an awareness and curiosity about the world around him.
When your baby can see objects and people around him, he is more interactive and interested in his little world.
Your baby might roll to get a better view of something or get closer to a toy that interests him.
How to encourage your baby to roll over?
Birth
Start to put your baby on the tummy for 5 minutes a few times a day.
2 - 4 months old
Start to put your baby on the tummy for 20 minutes a few times per day.
If your baby does not like tummy time on a blanket, let him try tummy time on an exercise ball.
Allow your baby to look at visually stimulating toys and objects, mirrors or funny faces.
Hold the object away from your baby’s face while lying on his back so he can see.
Move the object in an arc in front of your baby’s face encouraging him to track the item left and right.
As your baby turns his head, see if he turns his body as well.
If your baby rolls to one side, place a toy on the opposite side to encourage reaching the other way.
Hold your baby upright while snuggling.
When in a baby carrier, hold against your body to help your baby develop trunk strength.
Allow your baby to play while lying on his left or right side while you supervise him.
Limit the time your baby spends in a carrier, rocker, car seat and stroller, so he gets a lot of movement and practices the skills necessary for rolling.
With your baby’s muscles starting to develop, your baby will now learn to roll over from front to back.
4 - 5 months
Your baby will learn to roll front to side.
I hope all these pointers will let you take note of when your baby rolls over and how you can encourage your baby to roll over.
