Creating a Safe Space for Your Child’s Growth
Updated: Oct 21, 2021
Importance of creating a safe space
What exactly is a safe space? It is a place that provides a physically and emotionally safe environment where people can freely express themselves and feel confident that they will not be exposed to emotional or physical harm. Creating and owning a safe space helps to counterbalance the daily stresses one faces when they are out and about.
Home can be designed to be a safe space for you and your family, and act as a sanctuary from your life’s worries and pressures.
Creating a safe and structured environment at home is important for both the parent and child. However it is especially significant for a young child, specifically in the first five years of growth. A young child’s brain is most easily shaped or moulded in their early years of development. This is the most optimal time to start your little ones on their journey towards healthy cognitive development.
How do I create a safe home environment for my child?
Here are 5 ways you can start with creating your child’s safe space at home!
Accept your child for who they are
As obvious as it sounds, learn to appreciate, love and value your child for who they are. Research has never failed to show how this helps to build a more secure and close relationship between parent and child. Developing a positive image of themselves and having higher self-esteem in the little one’s early years reduces their chances of having psychological issues.
Moving on from mistakes
Allow your child to realise that it is perfectly okay if mistakes are made, as mistakes help your child (and yourself) to learn and grow from it. Particularly in their growing years, mistakes are inevitable when they are trying out new things. Sit your child down and explain the mistake they have made, and let them understand why it is wrong and how they can fix the mistake, as well as what they can improve on the next time round.

Create simple routines at home
Instills a sense of discipline in your child as they know what to expect, allowing their brain to work better. You can also plan the schedule with your child as it helps with establishing a sense of control and educates your child on how to manage time.
Keep in mind that home is a more relaxing and carefree environment. Thus do not overload your child with routines and chores that make them feel restricted. Just a simple skeletal routine will do, and free up time for play.
Here is how to raise kids who are not spoiled.
Listen to your child
Understand how your child is feeling and acknowledge their feelings. Assure them of a safe space that allows them to feel heard and their feelings validated. Thereafter talk to them about what caused them to feel what they are feeling, if they can do anything to make the situation better or whether it is out of their control. Listen to them and ensure that they are listening to you.
If your child is unable to do anything to better the situation that is making them feel upset, what are ways that they can change their mindset about the problems that they are facing? Perhaps enabling them to view the situation differently and find a silver lining in the less favourable situation that they are in introduces another perspective that they can adopt and learn from.
Solve conflicts at hand
Try to calm your child as much as possible in the most effective and fastest way for them. Remember that losing patience or showing anger may aggravate the situation instead. Keep your emotions in check as it could highly influence your child’s feelings. Some suggestions to calm a child could be to distract them, provide them with your attention or to bring them away from the situation such as taking a walk.
Hug and reassure them that you are emotionally and physically with them. When they have calmed down, bring the topic up and have an open talk to your child about their behaviour towards the conflict.
