The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Pacifiers

A pacifier tops the list of must-have items for a newborn since it offers your baby (and you) immense comfort and peace. Just imagine popping that pacifier into your baby's mouth to soothe their uncontrollable crying. Psst, simply enjoy the moments of silence — but are pacifiers good for your baby?

In this blog, we'll talk about the pros and cons of pacifier use so you can make the most informed decision for your little one.

Pros of pacifiers

Reduces the risk of SIDS

Unfortunately, babies younger than 1-year-old can die of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death. This is supported by a recent study from the Academy of Pediatrics that has proven that pacifier use during sleep has reduced the chances of SIDS by 90 percent.

Pacifiers are disposable

Your baby's sucking reflex is a real need that needs to be addressed. Unlike thumb-sucking, the pacifier is disposable and you can throw them away to wean your child off of using the pacifier. Furthermore, thumb-sucking for extended periods can introduce countless bacteria into your baby's body — which can result in them falling sick more often.

Helps your baby fall asleep

Of course, another benefit is that a pacifier may help them fall asleep faster — without needing to be held, rocked, or fed.

Cons of pacifiers

Possible dental problems in the long run

Yes, a pacifier may cause severe overbite in the future. If your child happens to continue using the pacifier after the baby teeth' position generally gets normalised, it may negatively affect the shape of your child's mouth, as well as the positioning of the teeth and jaw. To prevent alignment issues, parents should gently wean your child of the habit before it has too much of an impact on your baby's teeth.

Increase the risk of ear infections

When your baby sucks or swallows, there is a change in pressure behind the ear. This results in a shift of fluid into the ear, which can cause ear infections. Do note that this is more common after the age of 6 months!

Marker of breastfeeding difficulties

For breastfeeding moms, introducing a pacifier at an early stage could get in the way of your baby's ability to latch on and breastfeed — resulting in issues like sore nipples, engorgement, plugged milk ducts, and mastitis!
