A healthy hydration is essential to every system in our bodies — and this applies to children.

Our bodies lose water through breathing, sweating and digestion. Children who drink less than the recommended fluid intake per day are more likely to feel fatigued, get nauseous and may even suffer from headaches. That's why it is so important to keep your child hydrated throughout the day.

If you're wondering about the recommended fluid intake, Singapore's Health Promotion Board recommends toddlers between 1 to 2 years old require at least 1 to 3 250ml glass of water daily, and preschoolers between 3 to 6 years old require at least 3 to 5 250ml glass of water daily.

But.. what happens if your child hates drinking water?

Well, we'll be sharing some strategies that may help you make sure your child is staying hydrated and healthy. Keep scrolling for more!

Strategies To Help Your Child Maintain A Healthy Hydration

Fancy Straws And Bottles

Prepare fun, colourful straws and bottles for your little munchkins — they'll surely love sipping from their water bottle! You may even choose to buy water bottles with prints that they chose themselves. This encourages them to drink water from it throughout the day.

Lead By Example

As simple as it sounds, model the behaviour yourself. The more your little ones see you carrying out healthy drinking habits, the more likely they are to do the same!

You can even spice things up by putting together a sticker chart — so your entire family can strive to reach the daily water goals! You can even give your child a reward sticker if they reach the goals put in place!

Have The Potty Talk

Your urine colour is a good indicator of your hydration level. Optimally, your urine should be a pale yellow colour — and a dark yellow urine is usually a sign for you to drink more water. Let your child keep tabs on their hydration status using a urine colour chart!

Add Fruits

Fruits — such as strawberries, watermelon, oranges and broccoli — are high in water content. Plus, they helps add flavour to plain water! If your child hates the flavour of plain water, consider preparing bite-size pieces of frozen fruits so they can easily add them directly to their water!

Keep Water Available

Of course, you'll want to make sure that water is easily accessible for your child. Get tiny water bottles so that your child has a easy time holding them and keeping them on hand throughout the day. You should also guide them on how to use the water dispenser to fill their cup!
