Creating a Healthy Family Culture

What is a healthy family culture?

A healthy family culture highlights the importance of shared family values and in definition, comprises attitudes, ideas and ideals, and environment, which a child is influenced by their parents. It is founded on the basis of healthy and strong family relationships which is a major contributing factor to a child’s growth especially since family is a child’s primary social group.

A strong familial relationship allows a family to talk through conflicts and solve issues, with maintained respect for each other’s opinion and provides a secure environment for a child’s growth.

How does it help my child’s growing process?

Creating a healthy and loving familial relationship sets a strong emotional foundation in your child’s growth. If the foundation among family members is not strong, individuals will find it more challenging to do well in their own relationships, work and health.

Having strong familial ties allows the child to feel secure and loved, which empowers them with the independence and confidence to learn and try new things out of their comfort zones, to explore the world. Apart from the fact that it allows to solve problems and resolve conflict among family members, it helps to overcome difficulties faced during upbringing of the child, such as their habits and behaviour. It also imparts children the skills they need to build healthy relationships of their own, be it in the present or future.

How to create a healthy family culture?

Commitment

Commitment is a very large part of family engagement. Investing energy and time to participate in family activities and remembering to value family time over other priorities will strengthen family relationships.

On the daily

Utilise family meal time or even car travels fruitfully to talk and share about one another’s daily happenings. Catch up on and be involved in each other’s lives.

Organising family activities

Do fun and interesting things together as a family. This can be as simple as a family outing to the beach, group exercising or even taking a morning or evening stroll at the park! Perhaps you can organise occasional family outings or even a weekly family board games or movie nights. Spend time together without electronic devices lying around to encourage more meaningful interactions among one another.

Communication

Positive communication is about expressing yourselves truthfully, all while being open and respectful to each other’s opinions, thoughts and feelings. This enhances understanding of one another and strengthens relationships.

Try these positive communication ideas to strengthen your family relationships:

Give your child full or partner full attention and listen to them when they want to talk. Provide them with an opportunity and time to express their feelings and confide in you.

Keep an open-mind towards talking about difficult and very personal topics such as mistakes and their emotions, be it in a serious set up or in casual situations

Take note of non-verbal body languages that you express. Non-verbal actions such as displaying affection or even making eye contact relays a message that you care and are interested in your child’s life.

Managing conflicts

“Family: An anchor during rough waters” is a quote that I personally believe in. Families work together to solve the issue and build each other up during tough times. With that said, crisis and stress are golden opportunities to strengthen family bonds.

Instil a sense of belonging

Involve each family member, providing them with a role around the house. When your family works as a team, each one’s importance is valued and recognised. This allows boundaries and proper expectations to be set.

One of the ways to encourage teamwork among family members: separating roles in completing daily house chores. Especially so for a child, it also promotes sense of inclusion and instills a sense of responsibility in them.

Show appreciation towards each other

Showing appreciation expresses positive emotional feelings and displays care and concern for one another.

You can start with the little things such as thanking your little ones for helping you pick up something that you dropped or even praising them for being thoughtful. Acknowledge each others’ talents and strengths. This helps your child feel valued, and it encourages a more inclusive environment.
